DNase Agar is used for the differentiation of microorganisms on the basis of deoxyribonuclease activity and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. In 1956, Weckman and Catlin showed a correlation between increased DNase activity of Staphylococcus aureus and positive coagulase activity. Their research suggested DNase activity could be used to identify potentially pathogenic staphylococci. DiSalvo confirmed their results by obtaining excellent correlation between coagulase and DNase activity of staphylococci isolated from clinical specimens. Jeffries, Holtman, and Guse incorporated DNA in agar to study DNase production by bacteria and fungi. Polymerized DNA precipitates in the presence of 1N HCl, creating an opaque medium. Organisms that degrade DNA produce a clear zone around an inoculum streak. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/dnase-agar

E. coli / Coliform Agar is for the simultaneous enumeration of Escherichia coli and coliforms in food and environmental samples and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. This dual chromogenic substrate medium makes the different colony types easy to distinguish allowing rapid counting of both E. coli and coliforms on a single agar.Based upon the formulation of Tryptone Bile Agar, the medium has been modified by the addition of two chromogenic substrates, one to detect the ß-glucuronidase enzyme (X- glucuronide) and another to detect the ß-galactosidase enzyme (magenta-ß-gal). Typical E. coli strains possess both enzymes but only cleave the X-glucuronide substrate, thereby producing blue-green colonies. Typical coliforms, however, possess only the ß-galactosidase enzyme and produce rose-pink colonies. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/harlequin-e-coli-coliform-agar

Bile Salts No. 3 is a mixture of bile salts for use in preparing microbiological culture media in a laboratory setting. Several media containing Bile Salts No. 3 are recommended in standard methods for multiple applications. Bile Salts No. 3 is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Bile Salts No. 3 is a refined bile salts mixture, comprising mainly sodium cholate and sodium desoxycholate. Its primary use is as a selective agent for the isolation of Gram-negative micro-organisms, inhibiting Gram-positive cocci. Bile Salts No. 3 is prepared especially for use in MacConkey Agar and Violet Red Bile Agar. This fraction of bile is highly active allowing maximum selection of organisms of enteric origin at relatively low concentrations (0.15%) and is soluble in distilled or deionized water and neutral to slightly alkaline in pH.For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/bile-salts-number-3

EC Broth is used for the detection of coliform bacteria at 37°C and Escherichia coli at 44.5°C. EC Broth is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.EC Broth (Escherichia coli Broth) is a selective enrichment broth designed for the isolation of coliforms, including E. coli, from water and food samples. It was the recommended medium of the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the AOAC.EC Broth is made selective for coliforms by the inclusion of Bile Salts in the dehydrated medium. The selective nature of this medium ensures that the growth of non-coliform bacteria is minimized. The medium is buffered by the addition of potassium phosphates and osmotically balanced by sodium chloride. The medium is used at 37°C for coliform organisms and 44.5°C is recommended for the isolation E. coli. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/ec-broth

MacConkey Agar without Crystal Violet and Salt is used for the isolation and differentiation of Gram-negative enteric bacilli from specimens containing swarming strains of Proteus spp, and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.MacConkey Agar is based on the bile salt-neutral red-lactose agar of MacConkey. The original MacConkey medium was used to differentiate strains of Salmonella typhosa from members of the coliform group. Formula modifications improved growth of Shigella and Salmonella strains. These modifications include the addition of 0.5% sodium chloride, decreased agar content, altered bile salts, and neutral red concentrations. The formula modifications improved differential reactions between enteric pathogens and coliforms. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/macconkey-agar-without-crystal-violet-and-salt

Dermatophyte Test Medium is used for the selective isolation of dermatophytic fungi and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. In 1969, Taplin et al. developed this medium for the isolation and recognition of dermatophytic fungi, the causative agent of ringworm from hair, nails, and skin. Dermatophyte Test Medium is preferred for isolation and early recognition of Microsporum, Trichophyton, and Epidermophyton genera because of a distinct color change in the medium. Rapidly-growing species may produce a complete color change in the medium in 3 days. The slower-growing species will change the indicator in longer time periods. Other organisms may grow but can be recognized as non-dermatophytes by lack of a color change. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/dermatophyte-test-medium-dtm

Cronobacter Selective Broth (CSB) is recommended by ISO 22964 for the isolation and identification of Cronobacter spp. (formerly Enterobacter sakazakii), and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Although rarely causing infections in immunocompetent adults, members of the Cronobacter genus have been implicated in sepsis, meningitis and necrotizing enterocolitis with a high death rate in neonates. These opportunistic pathogens are common in the environment and their ability to survive desiccation presents a significant risk for post-pasteurization contamination and survival in spray dried milk products. Enzymatic digest of animal tissues and meat extract provide a source of nitrogen and essential vitamins. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/cronobacter-selective-broth

Modified Buffered Peptone Water with Pyruvate (mBPWp) is used for the isolation of Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) in a laboratory setting. Modified Buffered Peptone Water with Pyruvate (mBPWp) is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) are recognized as the primary cause of hemorrhagic colitis (HC) or bloody diarrhea. This infection can also lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Enterohemorrhagic infections are usually food or water borne and have been implicated in undercooked ground beef, raw milk, lunchmeat, water, unpasteurized apple cider, sprouts and vegetables. Listeria monocytogenes, described first in 1926 by Murray, Webb and Swann, is an extensive problem in public health and food industries. This organism has the ability to cause human illness and death, particularly in immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women. Epidemiological evidence from outbreaks of listeriosis indicates the principle route of transmission is via the consumption of foods contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Implicated vehicles of transmission include meat, eggs, chicken, vegetables, and dairy products. Listeria spp. are ubiquitous in nature, present in a wide range of unprocessed foods and in soil, sewage, and river water. Certain strains of Listeria spp. are able to survive the manufacturing and ripening processes in dairy products. For more information visit https://www.neogen.com/solutions/Microbiology/less-plus-medium
